Berry Jenkins has such a nice color grading here, it brings off this warm and smooth atmosphere and the score also helps add such a vibrance to this film. This is quite possibly one of the best scores I’ve ever heard in a film and it deserves every single award ever. Outside of Jenkins creating a stunning looking film, he also creates another intimate one (can you see a theme with movies I really attach to?) This is because Jenkins was able to adapt a terrific novel by James Baldwin and make it translate to the silver screen in such a calming and poetic fashion. Spike Lee takes a fun but also incredibly serious movie into one with a hard hitting truth- America has a whole lot more work to do when it comes to race relations, rather we would like to believe it or not. This film almost flows like a superhero movie in several ways. It’s fast, witty, hilarious and action packed, it’s so dang entertaining the entire way through. However, the film does the impressive balancing act of being able to treat the things that need to be treated seriously with grace and respect. I love the way they portray these KKK members was bumbling idiots, because that is what they are. Sure, they are dangerous and evil idiots, but idiots none the less. This film is able to have you laughing, to enraged to emotional in the span of a few minutes, and Spike Lee delivers on each and every feeling with extreme craft. This movie in other hands could have come off truly boring or muted but Spike Lee finds the humanity, action, humor and drama in this story and makes it one of the most engrossing movies going experiences I had in 2018.
