I still say this is the Fury Road of 2018, because I think it will truly pave the way some artists want to approach animated projects. However, Spider-Verse feels like a lightning in a bottle film experience you can only get a few times in a decade. One that feels completely fresh and new idea of looking at things. Animated or live action, Spider-Verse is one of the best blockbuster films ever made period. 2018 was the year I started to really appreciate comics outside of my love as a kid. I kinda wondered if we would get a film that felt truly like a comic. This is a completely sentimental pick for me. Eighth Grade is a movie that touched my heart and one I really connected to on a personal level. I loved Bo Burnham and his stand up and all the subversiveness he brought to stand up and even his YouTube days is on full display in his debut film. I don’t know if I’ve ever felt like a character in a film closely related to me as Kayla did in this movie. Throughout the movie, I kept thinking to myself, “I’ve done that before, I’ve felt that before-” I do love a lot of what John Hughes did with the teen film in the 80’s but its interesting that movies like Lady Bird and Eighth Grade are breaking down the coming of age genre in an even more honest way. Eighth Grade is a funny movie, a hysterical one that always feels like it is in the moment. The way Bo Burnham captured this generation of students is perfect. Eighth Grade feels like the Diary of a Wimpy Kid movie we all truly wanted. Every single moment is placed in so much truth and honesty about how it is like to come of age in the technology era of the 21st Century. I feel like anyone could take something away from this film. A lot of us have been that kid that felt forgotten in school from time to time, and this film gave us that spotlight. There is a scene at a campfire towards the end of this movie that might be my favorite scene in any movie this year. The dad tells Kayla exactly why she is wonderful, and it is honestly something so profound and significant and it made me wish I had seen this movie when I was in 8th Grade, because I certainly needed to hear that. I am really glad kids now have this movie to look to as well. School is kinda an awful obligatory thing, but surviving the painful awkward truths of adolescents is what makes you who you are.
