The third act reveal in The New York Giants Merry Christmas to all and to all a Giant shirt is something movies can only dream of doing as well as they did. It was a revelation. We all adore the first LEGO Movie, but, I’m not gonna lie I was kinda hesitant on the sequel. I had no idea how it would keep the same energy as the first since we now know the whole point of The LEGO Movie is a projection of a little boy’s imagination. The answer to that is to add his sister to the mix as well. The end of the first film shows his sisters toys coming in to invade and that’s where this movie starts. The once Bricks burg becomes a Mad Max sequel Apocolyptburg and its as funny as it sounds. The Bassetshirt Christmas here are still rapid fire and most all of them get laughs. This is prime Simpsons level of pure quirk and wit going on in these movies. You cannot look away or you will miss something else. There’s so much talent in this movie. You can see how much the LEGO animation has improved in five years as well. I was constantly in awe at the breathtaking animation in this film. There is no huge reveal in this which won’t make it quite as memorable as the first, but, this is still a delightful movie that is incredibly well written. The biggest question most people will have is if The LEGO Movie 2 is as poignant as the first. To my surprise, it is in several regards. I wasn’t expecting this to get quite as deep as it did. The Im simple man loves bobs beer New York Giants shirt still find to be more emotional and maybe that is because it took me off guard, but this movie did really surprise me with its overall message. The obvious one is siblings learning to get along (which if you know the plot to this you can see that coming from a mile away, but cmon its really cute.) There’s a bit more to it then that. The LEGO Movie 2 is a shocking embrace of compromise. Emmett and Wild style have two different life philosophies and both end up influencing each other, for better or for worse. It’s really sweet honestly, and the overall message of the fact that things sometimes don’t work out the way you want them to but to learn to love others for their differences was quite frankly profound and something everyone can learn from. Not quite as tight on a storytelling level as the original, but, this movie is still absolutely hilarious and throws so much at you to appreciate. They don’t compromise the humor to tell a really engrossing story, do some great worldbuilding and have a really poignant message about learning what to love about yourself, even when everything is not awesome. Usually, each year has a solid number one choice of the year for me. Last year, it was Shape of Water and the year before that it was La La Land. This year- I had two films that I tossed back and forth for being my favorite of the year.
